Max the pug's star keeps rising
DERRY -- Max has been in the spotlight before, but Derry residents will soon be able to see the hometown pug on a billboard near town.
Martin McCue of Derry, and his dog, Max, recently won the grand prize in the Best Friends Pet Care “Be Your Own Dog” pet personality video contest for “Sunday with Max the Pug.”
In addition to the billboard spot for Best Friends featuring Max, McCue also wins a professional photo shoot for Max.
Max should handle the photo shoot with few issues, as he has been basking in the spotlight for several years. He has his own website at www.mypugmax.com, has starred in YouTube videos viewed by more than a million people, and has been featured on the long-running “America's Funniest Home Videos” television program.
McCue describes Max as a confirmed bachelor who loves to stare at him all day, eat, and pass gas every 10 minutes.
“He is also a television star, appearing as a finalist on America's Home Videos on May 4, 2008,” McCue said. “Max gets about 20 fan emails a day from all over the world, and answers as many as he can.”
Six-year-old Max was born in Kansas, but McCue said he bought him in Gloucester, Mass. McCue teaches TV production at Salem High School.
“He was a very sick puppy and had pneumonia when I took him home,” McCue said. “It actually took a few months and many medications to get Max healthy.”
The 60-second video shows Max pestering McCue in order to get him out of bed on a Sunday morning.
The contest judges selected the video because it best fulfilled the contest criteria, receiving top scores for originality, entertainment value and video quality, according to Renee Coughlin, Best Friends vice president of marketing. The winning video is posted on the Best Friends Facebook page at www.facebook.com/Bestfriendspetcareinc.
“There were many fun entries and the judges had a great time screening the finalists,” said Coughlin. “The final tally was very close, but when all the votes were counted, Max edged out the competition by a pug's tail.”
Best Friends launched the “Be Your Own Dog” video contest to celebrate the company's 20th anniversary. Entries included videos of dogs, cats, rabbits, a ferret and even a turtle.
Best Friends Pet Care Inc. offers boarding, day camp, grooming and training for pets at 42 centers across the county.
