Fire crews handle propane leak caused by pickup in Merrimack

MERRIMACK — Fire crews were busy Sunday evening handling a propane tank leak at a home on Amherst Road.

Merrimack Fire Capt. Brian Dubriel said his department received a call at 5:51 p.m. reporting that a homeowner at 183 Amherst Road, using a pickup truck in the yard, had struck the valve on a newly-installed 500-gallon propane tank, damaging it and causing the gas to leak out.

“It’s a new tank, and they just forgot it was there,” said Dubriel. “Accidents like that happen, it’s not the first time we’ve responded to something like this.”

Dubriel said two Merrimack engine crews responded, with Nashua’s Engine 4 covering Merrimack’s station. The homeowners were kept a safe distance from the tank, but the size of the property, estimated at 40-plus acres, was sufficient to avoid evacuating nearby residences.

Workers from Bottled Gas of Nashua responded, and after firefighters removed the pickup truck from the tank they repaired the valve and stopped the leak, but not before an estimated 200 gallons of propane was released.

No injuries were reported, and Merrimack crews cleared the scene by 8 p.m. Amherst Road was closed while repairs were made to the tank.
