Chorus looking for a dozen voices
Members of Rhythm of New Hampshire Show Chorus kick off their Summer Singsation program with a comical pose on the risers. The program begins Thursday, July 19, and runs through Thursday, Aug. 16, from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. at the Marion Gerrish Community Center, 39 West Broadway, Derry. The free, four-session workshop will be held on Thursdays from July 19 through Aug. 16 at the chorus’ 39 West Broadway location. No vocal experience is required to attend the program, and all voice parts are welcome.
The Rhythm of New Hampshire Show Chorus is a charter member of Sweet Adelines International, an a capella harmony organization for women.
The group is looking to add another 10 to 12 singers to its ranks by the end of the program, according to RNH musical director Jessie Oslan.
“If you’ve thought about singing, like to sing in your car, or have been with other vocal groups and want to try something new, this workshop is for you,” said Oslan. “Any woman of average singing ability will find a part that fits her voice range.”
Oslan said there are a number of activities planned for the group, including a Friends and Family Night on Thursday, Aug. 16, at 8 p.m. and singing at the New Hampshire Fisher Cats baseball game on Aug. 18.
“It will be a fun and exciting session, and we invite women of all ages and backgrounds, even those in high school and college, to come experience how much fun we have together,” Oslan said.
RNH assistant director Renee Fellows said the group is also looking toward the future of barbershop singing and trying its hand at some contemporary arrangements that incorporate vocal percussion to add to its repertoire of blues, jazz, Broadway and contemporary tunes.
“This season, we’re working on a medley of Katy Perry’s ‘Firework,’ the Black Eyed Peas’ ‘I Got a Feeling,’ and Christina Aguilera’s ‘Amazing,’” said Fellows.
The group is also starting work on its fifth original stage production, “The Holiday Wrist,” centered around the madcap happenings during a snowed-in holiday radio show, according to Fellows.
The show is scheduled to appear at the Derry Opera House on Saturday, Dec. 1.
