Woman wins Hood-Red Sox prize at Manchester Market Basket
MANCHESTER — It pays for a Newton, Mass., saleswoman to cruise the Internet.
On Sunday night, Marybeth Crowley visited the Hood dairy website, where after a little snooping she read that a Hood-Red Sox promotional giveaway was taking place Monday at the Manchester Market Basket.
So with her Red Sox jacket, she hung around the ice cream cooler. After placing four half-gallons of Hood ice cream in her shopping cart, Crowley won the prize — a weekend at a Portland, Maine, hotel.
Red Sox minor leaguer Jose Iglesias, who plays with the Pawtucket Red Sox, presented Crowley with balloons and her prize.
“I’m a big Red Sox fan, and Hood fan, and Market Basket fan, and I love Jose,” Crowley said. “He’s young, and he’s adorable.”
Hood is giving out five surprise getaways to promote its New England Creamery brands of ice cream, which are inspired by New England locations.
For example, Crowley had to touch the Downeast Double Fudge Brownie flavor to win the getaway, which is valued at $1,200. The prize includes gift cards for dinner, a spa and a 2-hour cruise on Casco Bay.
A Cuban defector, Iglesias played in 10 games last year for the Red Sox.
He is on a two-day rest because of the All-Star break.
“They’re a good team, they just need to win,” Iglesias said about the Red Sox.
A resident of Miami, Iglesias said he is a Heat fan and was happy to see the team sign Celtics guard Ray Allen.
