Derry woman to plead guilty in Verizon store robbery

BRENTWOOD — A Derry woman charged with taking part in robbing a Verizon store where she once worked is expected to plead guilty to charges that she stole more than a dozen cell phones and a deposit box with roughly $13,652 in cash.

Janeen Harring, 26, would receive a suspended 12-month jail sentence in exchange for her guilty plea to three Class A felonies, according to court documents. Harring will also be required to pay $18,400 in restitution as part of the deal.

Had she been convicted by a jury on those charges, Harring could have faced up to 7½ to 15 years in state prison.

Harring is expected to make her plea on July 25 in Rockingham County Superior Court.

Her plea bargain will allow her to plead guilty to three of the 11 charges brought against her in superior court for allegedly taking part in the May 25 theft while she was an employee.

Derry police say Harring stole $4,745 in merchandise and the money with another Derry man, Wayne Thompson, 26, of Derry, who also is facing charges in superior court.

The plea deal was struck after defense lawyer Oliver Sakellarios asked a judge to throw out Harring’s confession. Sakellarios claimed Harring was tricked into speaking with police.

Sakellarios said in court papers that his client mentioned wanting to speak with a lawyer three times during her police interview.

“Not once did the interrogation cease,” he said.

Derry police began investigating a theft at the Verizon Go Wireless store, located at 55 Crystal Ave. No. 2, last May 26, according to court papers.

A store employee told police the door to the business was found open that morning and that several phones were missing along with the overnight deposit box, according to a police affidavit.

Harring told police she worked at the store the night before the burglary, the affidavit says.

Thompson approached her about stealing from the store while she was working that night, according to police.

Thompson came in just before closing time, and the two loaded the cell phones and a deposit box into trash bags, the affidavit said. They put the trash bags in Harring’s car, police said.
