Bail set at $15k for charges related to purse snatching
MANCHESTER — A city man wanted in connection with a purse snatching last week and use of a credit card taken from the purse, as well as the alleged assault of his pregnant girlfriend June 30, pleaded innocent to a total of nine charges Tuesday in Circuit Court-Manchester District Division.
Police said Anthony Parker Ford, 20, of 84 Karatzas Ave., drove the getaway car in the purse snatching about 9 p.m. on July 3 at a Rite-Aid located at 270 Mammoth Road.
The 68-year-old victim told police a young white man shoved her and grabbed her purse. Witnesses said the purse snatcher got into a waiting vehicle, which drove off. The woman’s purse was later found in an alley, with only a credit card missing.
Police said a subsequent investigation identified Parker-Ford as the driver of the getaway vehicle and as the individual who later used the woman’s credit card to buy items at several area locations.
Court documents show police determined the credit card was used successfully five times on July 3 and 4 and unsuccessfully three times, including twice shortly after it was taken at the Tedeschi Food Mart, 245 Maple St., in an effort to obtain $100 in cash each time.
Police said surveillance video showed Parker Ford using the card to obtain cigarettes and a cash card at a Beech Street store July 3.
Three days after the purse snatching, a detective spotted Parker-Ford driving in the area of Maple and Auburn streets. Police said his license is suspended and when a detective tried to stop and detain him, he fled on foot.
Patrol officers Monday night saw Parker-Ford again, this time near Eastern Avenue. Police said he again ran from officers but was quickly caught and arrested.
Parker-Ford is charged with three counts of fraudulent use of a credit card, two of resisting arrest, one of receiving stolen property, one of second offense operating after suspension, one charge of simple assault and one of criminal mischief.
The assault and mischief charges stem from an incident June 30, in which Parker Ford alleged punched his pregnant girlfriend in the face three or four times and destroyed her sunglasses.
Police prosecutor Steven Mangone Tuesday successfully sought $15,000 cash/surety bail for Parker Ford, saying he has convictions in 2010 for assault and criminal mischief and in November 2011 for disorderly conduct, for which he received a 12-month sentence suspended for two years of good behavior. Mangone said Parker Ford also failed to appear on another charge in March 2012.
Trial on all charges was set for Oct. 16.
Police continue to search for the man who stole the woman’s pocketbook.
