Autopsy shows armed Litchfield man shot in the back
LITCHFIELD — A police officer shot and killed a local man who was firing a gun from the front porch of his Page Road home Monday afternoon, according to investigators.
Jason Lagueux, 35, of 31 Page Road, unit #23, was shot by an officer who responded to a call of shots being fired. Lagueux was treated at the scene and later transported to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua, where he was pronounced dead.
Local police, along with deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department and state troopers, responded to Lagueux's mobile home around 2 p.m. Upon arrival, officers heard several more gunshots and encountered Lagueux, who was armed, according to Ben Agati of the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office.
Agati would not elaborate on the details of the shooting Monday night, nor did investigators identify the officer involved in the fatal shooting.
Investigators said none of the responding officers, deputies or troopers were injured. Joseph O'Brion Jr., Litchfield police chief, referred all questions to the Attorney General's Office.
Neighbors said Lagueux lived at the mobile home by himself, and described him as a nice and friendly guy.
“I heard some gunshots and then police came and evacuated me and my step-mom. As we walked away, I heard lots of gunshots,” said Devin Tardif, 18, who lives at the park.
Authorities would not elaborate on how many shots were fired, or the nature of Lagueux's gunshot wound.
Nearby residents said they heard gunshots throughout the day. Some thought the noise was fireworks.
“This is just crazy. This type of thing doesn't happen in Litchfield,” said Matt Paquette, 18, of Litchfield. “We are still in shock.”
Another resident at the mobile home park, Donald McCaffrey, described Lagueux as a man who loved life, and was often talking about his daughter, who is in her early teens.
“He was a really friendly guy. I just don't understand what happened,” said McCaffrey.
Lagueux's mother arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting and was reportedly sitting in the middle of the road crying and screaming hysterically, according to neighbors. Several of the residents tried to console her.
Agati said Monday that the state police Major Crime Unit is investigating the case because it is an officer-involved shooting.
An autopsy is scheduled for this morning by the state Medical Examiner's Office. Page Road was closed for a short period of time while police investigated, and authorities remained on the scene throughout the evening. Neighbors gathered nearby to observe the heavy police presence.
“This is usually a pretty quiet neighborhood,” said Tardif.
