MANCHESTER— City police report incremental progress in an education and enforcement campaign aimed at correcting bad habits of pedestrians and motorists downtown.

The campaign was launched as a public education effort in which jaywalkers and motorists who ignored rules about driving through crosswalks

“We’ve been making a lot of stops,” Lt. Maureen Tessier said. “We’ve issued a few summonses and have made some arrests.”

Many of the arrests came because a driver with an outstanding arrest warrant or a revoked license was tripped up by a simple traffic violation. A check of motor vehicle records meant finishing the journey in the back seat of a cruiser.

Police started the crackdown by handing out informational cards that explained state traffic laws.

“It’s been going pretty well, but you get a bit of resistence,” Tessier said. “People have bad habits and it’s hard to correct bad behavior.”
