BERLIN — The Federal Bureau of Prisons job fair at New Hampshire Employment Security in Berlin drew more than 50 interested job seekers from all over New Hampshire.

“This crowd made us happy,” said Diana Nelson, employer services representative for New Hampshire Employment Security. “I don’t think any of us expected this. I think people want to talk to real, live people from the talent team and the Bureau of Prisons.”

The talent team is made up of local educators, businesspeople, and government employees to help job seekers find positions with the Federal Bureau of Prisons and also helps newly transferred employees get settled into the area.

Representatives from various departments of the new federal prison were on hand to give an overview of the application process and answer questions about benefits, scheduling and personnel issues. Sign-ups for classes at White Mountain Community College to help with the application process were available.

Zachary Wallace of Stark said he has a job now, but wanted to find out more about the openings at the new federal prison scheduled to open in late fall.

“I’m just getting some information and putting my name in,” he said.

Karl Chandler came from out of state to apply. Originally from Bartlett, he hopes to relocate to Berlin to be near his girlfriend, Melanie Mallett.

He served 13 years in the Army and plans to apply for a correction officer position, in part because of the federal retirement benefits.

“It’s another way to get to that 20-year mark and not have to deploy to Afghanistan,” he said.

“We don’t want you to have to do that again,” Mallett agreed.

Brad Barrette is originally from Berlin, but lives in Hooksett. He said he was looking at electronics technician and correction officer opportunities at the prison and exploring his options for returning to the area.

“No other job could entice me to come back,” he said.

Nelson said the prison has 86 staff members on site now — or about 40 percent of the total needed. Roughly 200 positions are unfilled, with a little less than half that number being correction officer positions.

Positions available include cook supervisors, drug treatment counselors, maintenance personnel, and correction officers among others.
