Toddler who fell into Newport pool dies
A Newport toddler died Monday from injuries suffered when she fell into a swimming pool Sunday afternoon, police said.
Nineteen-month-old Macie Emery gained access to a friend's pool at 41 Pine Tree Rd. during a family visit on Sunday. She is believed to have been in the water several minutes and was unresponsive when her mother, Marissa Smith, discovered her, police said.
Emery was in critical condition at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon before succumbing to her injuries Monday afternoon, police said.
A preliminary investigation revealed the pool was equipped with adequate safety fencing and gates, though they were not secured in the minutes leading up to the incident.
Newport police and the Sullivan County Attorney's office are investigating, though no criminal charges are expected at this time.
