Danny Barnes’ Double-A debut wasn’t a memorable one for the 22-year-old prospect.

Barnes yielded a two-out, three-run walk-off homer to Oswaldo Arcia in the ninth inning as New Britain captured the first game of a Eastern League doubleheader with an 8-5 victory against New Hampshire Monday at New Britain (Conn.) Stadium. Steven Hirschfeld threw a complete game six-hitter and fanned six batters as the Rock Cats took the nightcap, 4-0. The two games Monday were each slated for seven innings.

Barnes, a righthander who was selected by Toronto in the 35th round of the 2010 first-year player draft, was called up from Single-A Dunedin Monday. The former Princeton University hurler made 36 relief appearances for Dunedin, carrying a 1-2 mark with a 1.98 ERA. In 36-1/3 innings, he allowed eight earned runs, three homers, 14 walks and had 43 strikeouts.

Barnes retired the first two batters in the ninth before allowing a single to Aaron Hicks and a walk to Chris Herrmann. Arcia then lined his third homer to right field to end the contest.

Barnes had relieved 35-year-old lefthanded reliever Les Walrond, who was signed by Toronto and assigned to New Hampshire on Monday. Against the Rock Cats, Walrond pitched two scoreless innings, replacing Fernando Hernandez who went the first five frames.

Walrond struck out the side in the home sixth with Estarlin De Los Santos , James Beresford and Aaron Hicks all going down swinging. He also retired all three batters he faced in the seventh inning.

Walrond was pitching this season with the Lancaster Barnstormers of The Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. In 21 appearances he was 3-1 with a 3.33 ERA for the Barnstormers, who are managed by former Nashua Pride manager Butch Hobson.

Walrond has made a combined 23 major-league appearances in brief stints with the Royals (2003), Cubs (2006) and Phillies (2008) — was a combined 4-2 with a 1.80 ERA this season for Philadelphia’s Double-A (Reading) and Triple-A (Lehigh Valley) affiliates.

In the nightcap, Arcia collected two RBIs and Romero belted his 13th homer of the season to lead the Rock Cats. Jake Marisnick had two of New Hampshire’s six hits. The Fisher Cats are now 37-59 on the season. Chris Jakubauskas (0-2) took the loss, allowing five hits and three runs in four innings.
