Northern Pass foes plan protest

Opponents of the proposed Northern Pass are planning a Sept. 1 protest in communities along the hydropower transmission project's route.

“Stand on your town common, across the (right of way), in your backyard, in the street, wherever you think you will get the most attention,” Martha Richards of Holderness wrote in an email.

Hands Across New Hampshire is modeled after the 1986 demonstration in which 6.5 million in communities across America held hands for 15 minutes to raise awareness of hunger and homelessness.

Richards said there are organizing efforts in Concord, Manchester and the Plymouth area. Richards said the $1.1 billion project does not enjoy support from residents in most of the 30 or so communities through which the high-voltage transmission line would pass. Many communities voted to oppose the project at town meetings this year.

Martin Murray, senior corporate news representative for PSNH and a Northern Pass spokesman, said the project will result in “cleaner air, reduced energy costs, an estimated 1,200 jobs during a three-year construction cycle, and millions of dollars in annual tax payments for years to come.”

The protest is planned for Saturday, Sept. 1, from 3 to 3:30 p.m.
