CONCORD — Andrew Dupuis snapped off a beauty, throwing a three-hit shutout as Lamprey River defeated Rye, 6-0, in the 11-and-12-year old Little League District II championship Tuesday evening at Concord's Grappone Park.

“My curveball was outstanding. It was breaking unbelievably,” said Dupuis, who, along with teammate Brian Lambert, played in the district title game for the second straight summer. “I was more nervous, but more excited and had a happier ending this time.

Lamprey River (8-2) will face District I champion Bedford for the state championship, a best-of-three-game series commencing at 4 p.m. Saturday back at Grappone Park. Bedford outscored the opposition, 77-12, winning five straight games in the district's double elimination tournament.

Dupuis held a Rye squad that plated five runs against him in an extra-inning setback last week in round-robin tourney play hitless until the third inning, when Will Gerrish put down a two-strike two-out bunt. Jack Reaney and Cody Graham also collected hits.

The righty threw a first-pitch strike to 16 of the 20 batters he faced, striking out three without issuing a walk. The defense played error-free ball behind him with second baseman Eric Reardon making two great fielding plays.

“When I use my fastball to get ahead in the count my curveball is even more deadly,” said Dupuis.

“He kept us off balance,” said Rye coach Derek Malila. His young squad included six 11-year olds. “We couldn't hit it out of the infield. Hit it a couple of inches left or right and maybe we get a different result, but that's baseball.”

Lamprey River produced three-run rallies in the third and fifth innings. Brandon Eaton's two-out full-count single drove home two scores. Johnny Cantwell, Nick Champagne and Andrew Lufkin plating runs two innings later.

“At any given time someone on this team takes a turn at making the play,” said Mark Dupuis coach of the Lamprey River all-star team representing five communities. “I knew we had a special group when the kids wanted to continue playing following a three-hour practice one hot Saturday. They are a dream to coach.”
