Walking girl injured by flying debris from Thursday evening wreck at Rochester Commons
ROCHESTER – Police are looking for the driver of a car with Maine plates who left the Commons after an accident Thursday evening that injured a 10-year-old pedestrian, damaged property and left a minivan burned.
Police, firefighters and emergency personnel responded around 7:22 p.m. after a 2005 Dodge Caravan, operated by Dana Smith, 63, of Rochester, left the road traveling southbound along South Main Street. It drove onto the sidewalk and through a wooden fence bordering a walking path at the Commons before coming to a stop, according to police.
Smith and an unidentified passenger were both able to get out of the Caravan, which came to rest entangled by several wooden posts and on fire. Firefighters extinguished the flames, which caused unspecified damage, according to police.
South Main Street was closed until the Caravan was towed from the scene.
Frisbie Memorial Hospital paramedics examined Smith and his passenger, who refused treatment. A 10-year-old girl struck by flying debris while she walked in the Commons was transported to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, according to police.
During the investigation, police determined another vehicle – a small car, possibly a Ford with different colored body panels and Maine registration - was involved in the accident. The second vehicle did not stop and police are looking to identify and question the driver.
