BOSTON — The Toronto Blue Jays jumped out to a quick lead against Josh Beckett and the Red Sox at Fenway Park Friday night and held on for 6-1 win.

Meanwhile, Toronto left-hander Aaron Laffey kept the Boston offense quiet. Laffey went seven scoreless innings, giving up eight hits with no walks, and four strikeouts. He improved to 2-1, lowering his ERA to 2.77.

The Blue Jays scored two runs off Beckett in the first inning.

With one out in the first, Colby Rasmus tripled to right field off Beckett, Rasmus' fourth triple of the season.

Rasmus scored when Edwin Encarnacion, the next batter, grounded to third baseman Will Middlebrooks, who attempted to throw out Rasmus at the plate. While replays appeared to show Rasmus missed the plate and catcher Kelly Shoppach tagged him, Rasmus was called safe with the Blue Jays' first run.

Adam Lind's double to right put runners on the corners, with Encarnacion scoring on J.P. Arencibia's single to left, giving Toronto a 2-0 lead.

Yunel Escobar led off the second with a double to center. With two outs, Anthony Gose walked and Rasmus' double scored Escobar and Gose for the 4-0 Toronto advantage.

Toronto added a run in the fifth when Encarnacion singled off Middlebrooks' glove, advancing to second on the Boston third baseman's throwing error. Lind's single drove in Encarnacion, putting Toronto ahead, 5-0.

Boston's best chance to get back in the game came in the third when Mike Aviles led off with a single, taking second on Jacoby Ellsbury's one-out single, and advancing to third on Carl Crawford's fly out to right. But Aviles was stranded when Dustin Pedroia flied out to right to end the inning.

Boston scored its run on a ninth inning Aviles RBI groundout.

Notes: The Blue Jays completed a 10-player trade with the Astros. Toronto acquired left-hander J.A. Happ and right-handers Brandon Lyon and David Carpenter. Happ and Lyon were expected to join the team in Boston some time Friday night. Both will work out of the bullpen. Carpenter will be assigned to Triple-A Las Vegas. The Blue Jays gave up outfielder Ben Francisco, right-handers Francisco Cordero, Asher Wojciechowski and Joe Musgrove, left-hander David Rollins, and catcher Carlos Perez. ... Outfielder Travis Snider, a former New Hampshire Fisher Cat, was called up from Triple-A. ... Edwin Encarnacion entered the game batting .405 (17-for-42) with three home runs and 15 RBIs in his last 13 games, going back to 2011, against the Red Sox. ... Entering the game, Escobar was batting .375 (18-for-48) with a .436 on-base percentage and .500 slugging percentage in his last 13 games against the Red Sox. ... Red Sox closer Andrew Bailey, who has been on the disabled all season after surgery on his right thumb, had a bullpen session Friday afternoon, throwing about 38 pitches. He is scheduled for another bullpen Sunday, and could pitch some batting practice Wednesday when the Red Sox are in Texas. ... With two runs allowed in the first inning, Beckett's ERA in the first inning went up from 10.20 to 10.69. ... Crawford has hit safely in all five games since being activated Monday from the disabled list, where had had been since the season began.
