Police: Manchester man torched car, claimed he was carjacked
AUBURN - Police responded to a reported carjacking at Chester Turnpike and Raymond Road early Wednesday morning but ended up arresting the owner on charges of filing a false report and arson for setting the vehicle on fire.
It was about 5 a.m. Wednesday when police received the call of a carjacking. Sgt. David Garofano came across a man, who had one shoe on and was quite emotional, walking on Raymond Road.
About 200 feet east of him was a Volkswagen Jetta was fully in flames.
The man, identified by police as Joseph Tonery, 23, of Floyd Avenue, Manchester, set his own car on fire, police said. As a result, he was arrested and charged with false report to law enforcement, a class A misdemeanor, and arson, a class B felony.
Fire Department Chief Bruce Philips said the car was fully in flames when firefighters arrived.
Tonery is being held on cash bail pending arraignment later today in 10th Circuit Court, Candia District.
