The summer Olympics are scheduled to formally open in London this evening. For America, these games have already had their low, with official uniforms made in China (as with so much else sold in America), and looking like something out of some UN politically-correct fashion magazine.

Fortunately, a highlight may come this evening. That is when veteran NBC sports announcer Bob Costas is scheduled to have an on-air minute of silence to remember the slaughter of Israeli Olympic athletes by Palestinian terrorists 40 years ago.

Why is this a highlight? Because Costas is doing what the International Olympic Committee refuses to do. As Wall Street Journal columnist David Feith noted, “the IOC is upholding tradition in treating the Munich massacre as a mild nuisance best forgotten.’’

Arab nations have long objected to any acknowledgement of the massacre of Israeli coaches and athletes, 11 in all. The Olympics officials remain worried, 40 years later, that Arab nations might boycott the games if honor is paid to innocent victims of Palestinian terror.

Good for Costas for remembering. Good for NBC for letting him do this. Good for everyone who shares that moment to remember a tiny country that has given so much and remains America’s steadfast ally and upholder of freedom in the Mideast.
