Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center partners with Mayo Clinic in Minnesota

Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon has partnered with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
LEBANON — Dartmouth-Hitchcock has become the first medical center in the East to form a medical partnership with the famed Mayo Clinic of Rochester, Minn.

Administrators from both care providers met in Lebanon on Friday to announce their “formal collaboration” aimed at bringing the strengths of both organizations to the goal of improving health and health care quality while lowering overall costs.

Patients at DHMC in Lebanon will be able to get second opinions on diagnoses from doctors at the Mayo Clinic.

The agreement calls for DHMC — New Hampshire’s largest hospital — to become a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, described Friday as a growing system of like-minded organizations that share a commitment to serving patients and their families.

“Dartmouth-Hitchcock and Mayo share a long history of working to deliver high-quality, cost-effective, safe, value-based health care,” said Dr. James N. Weinstein, DHMC’s CEO and president.

“From creating the ‘High Value Healthcare Collaborative’ with other partners, to advancing the patient’s voice in health-care decisions, Mayo and (DHMC) have pursued a common vision, mission, and commitment to a healthy population.”

Dartmouth-Hitchcock will remain an independent entity under the agreement. As a member of the Mayo Clinic network, its physicians and providers will have access to Mayo’s resources, including tools to promote physician-to-physician consultations and a point-of-care database of best-practice information on disease management, care guidelines, treatment recommendations and reference materials, administrators of both facilities said in a news release.

“Health care in America is at a crossroads,” said Dr. John H. Noseworthy, Mayo Clinic’s president and CEO, during Friday’s presentation.

“Providers are seeking meaningful relationships that allow them to best address their patients’ needs while improving the efficiency and effectiveness of care. The Mayo Clinic Care Network is about advancing longstanding relationships with organizations who share a commitment to improving care and value for our patients.

“We are very proud to welcome Dartmouth-Hitchcock into the Mayo Clinic Care Network, and building the long tradition of collaboration between our two organizations to serve patients throughout this region.”

Administrators on Friday described ties between the two centers that date to 1927 when Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic was formed. They said the clinics have been frequent sharers of information, as well as collaborators on research, grants, clinical care, and health policy and health reform.

DHMC and Mayo are discussing a number of future joint projects, including advancing population health using large data systems, expanding clinical and basic research, joint educational initiatives and moving the science of health care delivery forward.

“Mayo Clinic is one of the most respected health-care institutions in the world,” Weinstein said.

“They are an exemplar of excellent patient-focused care and the highest professional standards. Dartmouth-Hitchcock has valued our long and close relationship and we are delighted to take it a step further with this formal collaboration.”

The year-old Mayo Clinic Care Network now has membership that extends to Arizona, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire and North Dakota.
