DERRY — A 24-year-old Derry man is facing a number of charges after he allegedly assaulted his 21-year-old girlfriend at his apartment at 9 Everett St. on Sunday evening.

Joseph Greenquist was arraigned in Derry District Court on Monday on four counts of simple assault, second-degree assault, criminal threatening (misdemeanor), criminal threatening (felony), possession of a dangerous weapon by a felon and felony criminal restraint.

Greenquist’s bail was set at $25,000 cash, and he was taken to the Rockingham County jail. He is scheduled to appear for a probable cause hearing on Aug. 6 at Derry District Court.

Derry police responded to a reported domestic disturbance at 9 Everett St. just before 8 p.m. on Sunday. Officers met with the woman who stated that her boyfriend had assaulted her repeatedly, threatened to kill her and at one point produced a shotgun, according to police Capt. Vernon Thomas.

“The woman stated that she fled the apartment as soon as she was able to get away from him,” said Thomas.

The woman also stated that Greenquist was possibly still in the apartment with a shotgun. As a precaution, police evacuated other families from the multi-family home and then tried to contact Greenquist.

“A neighbor reported that Greenquist may have walked into the wooded area behind the home prior to police arrival,” stated Thomas. “It was not known if he was carrying the shotgun at the time.”

Londonderry police officers responded to the scene while Derry officers cordoned off the area and began an extensive search. Police found Greenquist walking on Hillside Avenue, unarmed, a little after 10 p.m.

“Once he was in custody, it was determined that Greenquist had a prior record as a convicted felon,” said Thomas.

Thomas said the officers spoke with the alleged victim in the incident, who stated that she and Greenquist had been arguing earlier at 9 Everett St.

“She alleged that he told her he was going to punish her and struck her repeatedly across the buttocks before pushing her into the living room wall,” Thomas stated. “He told the victim that if she did not stop acting up, she would be murdered. She said that he twice grabbed her by the neck, once with his hand and then again by placing her into a headlock that choked her.”

Greenquist allegedly carried her into the bedroom and pushed her into the closet where he barricaded her by placing a chair against the door so it would not open, according to Thomas.
