Goffstown Legion ousts Londonderry from tournament
NASHUA — Coming off what he called an emotional one-run victory Sunday against Post 79 of Manchester, Londonderry manager Rick Brothers said he knew his team was facing an uphill battle against the “best hitting wooden bat team in the state.”
Goffstown proved him right last night, pounding out 15 hits en route to a 10-5 decision in the New Hampshire State American Legion Baseball Tournament at Holman Stadium.
Unbeaten Goffstown faces once-beaten Concord today at 4 p.m. in the championship finals. Concord must beat Goffstown twice today to claim the state title. The second title game, if necessary, would start around 7 p.m.
Goffstown manager Nick Jaskolka said he plans to start standout Ryan Smith in the first game.
“We're going with our ace,” said Jaskolka. “Our approach, as was the case tonight, is to come out and win that first championship game.”
If Goffstown lost last night, it would have moved into tonight's second title game. But Jaskolka said “we're not that type of team. We take the field with the intention of winning every game we play.”
Last night Goffstown erupted for six runs after two outs in the third inning, virtually salting the game.
Ryan Beal, Ryan Smith, Adam Routhier, Patrick Viviers (two-run double) and Tucker Allard each had RBI hits in the frame.
“Two of those hits were well-placed pitches at the knees and they still got hits,” said Brothers. “I mean you tip your cap off to them. They have a veteran team with many good hitters and when you're down 6-1 against the best hitting wooden bat team in the state, you're in a huge hole.”
Goffstown starter and winning pitcher Jake Glauser threw well in six innings. He allowed five hits, two runs and four walks with two strikeouts.
“He gave us everything we were hoping for and more,” said Jaskolka. “His location was very good and he got outs. I was very happy with his effort on the mound tonight.”
Londonderry never gave up, closing the gap to 9-5 with two runs in the eighth inning. Kasey Carollo, Dan Kinnon and Zachary Tavano each had an RBI for Londonderry.
“We had a young team this season and we're going to build off this,” said Brothers. “We're only going to get better.”
