Help sought identifying man who jumped from I95 bridge

PORTSMOUTH — The U.S. Coast Guard seeks the public's help in identifying a man who jumped off the Interstate 95 bridge to Kittery, Maine, on Wednesday evening.

Police said they responded to a report of a man on a bike looking over the bridge around 5 p.m. The bridge is also referred as the 'high level bridge' by area residents.

As units arrived, the man threw a wallet, left his bike and jumped off the high-level bridge, according to New Hampshire State Police and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Police said efforts were made to locate the man in the water, but so far those efforts have not been successful.

The case is under investigation by New Hampshire State Police, who were assisted by the U.S. Coast Guard, New Hampshire Marine Patrol, Maine State Police and the Portsmouth Police Department in the search.

According to a release from Coast Guard Sector Northern New England on Wednesday night, they launched a 47-foot motor life boat and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod in the search. Two Coast Guard auxiliary vessels were also on scene.

Boat crews searched about five nautical square miles and did not find anyone, according to the Coast Guard.

Anyone with information about the person who jumped has been asked to contact the Coast Guard or New Hampshire State Police.
