MANCHESTER — They played some baseball at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium on Sunday, but mostly they played the waiting game.

After the New Hampshire Fisher Cats rallied for a 6-5 victory over Akron in the first game of a doubleheader, the second contest was delayed by rain in the bottom of the third inning with Akron leading 3-2. After a two-hour delay, the game was suspended and is scheduled to be completed in Akron on Friday.

“This field drains really well, but after two hours of waiting … they've got a 14-hour bus ride and we've got a 10-hour bus ride and they didn't want to wait any longer,” said Fisher Cats manager Sal Fasano. “The umpires weren't sure if it was going to get dry enough in the time we had allotted, so they wanted to stop it.”

Both Friday games will be scheduled for seven innings. The Fisher Cats will be the home team for the completion of the suspended game.

The Fisher Cats rallied from a 5-1 deficit to win the opener, which dropped Akron's record to 67-46.

New Hampshire (44-70) scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, which included a three-run home run by right fielder Brad Glenn that capped the scoring. Glenn's homer came against reliever Rob Bryson.

“I was looking for a heater because this guy didn't look like he was commanding his slider too well,” Glenn said. “He gave me a fastball and left it out over the plate. A little wind helped. I just put it high into left field and luckily it got out.”

Ryan Tepara surrendered five runs — four in the fourth — in 5 2/3 innings, but picked up the win to improve his record to 6-1. He's 4-0 in his last four starts and became the first New Hampshire pitcher to collect six wins this season.

“There's been times when he's picked us up this season,” Glenn said. “Today we picked him up.”

Sam Dyson recorded the final four outs to collect the save.

“(Tepara) had three really good innings, one bad inning and battled through another one,” Fasano said. “In the development stages you try and take the positives, and his stuff was really good today. He was a little sporadic in one inning, but he gave us a chance to win.”

GAME NOTES: Fisher Cats shortstop Ryan Goins collected a single in Sunday's first game and has hit safely in nine of his last 11 games. He has 130 hits this season and needs 26 more to tie the team record set by current Minnesota Twin Darin Mastroianni in 2010. Goins had two hits in Game 2, but those won't become official until the game is completed. … Glenn's three-run home run was his 15th of the season. He led the Florida State League in home runs last season, when he hit 26 while playing for Dunedin. … Akron outfielder Thomas Neal entered Sunday tied with Trenton's Jose Pirela for the Eastern League lead in hitting (.324). He failed to collect a hit during three at-bats in Game 1, and didn't play in Game 2. … The Akron pitching staff began the day with a 3.14 ERA, which was the lowest among Double-A, Triple-A and major league teams.
