2 teens seriously hurt in head-on crash in Deerfield

DEERFIELD — Two Epsom teenagers were seriously injured Wednesday morning when their truck struck an SUV head-on, police said.

The 16-year-old girls were eastbound on Echo Valley Farm Road just before 10:30 a.m. in a 1994 Chevy pickup when the driver went off the dirt road into a culvert and then returned to the roadway, striking a 2004 Honda Pilot heading west, Detective Sgt. Daniel Deyermond said.

Deyermond said it appears the truck hit the SUV when the teen driver overcorrected after going off the road.

The teenage driver appeared to have hit her head on the steering wheel and suffered multiple cuts, Deyermond said. She also complained of back pain.

Her passenger also complained about back injuries.

The driver of the SUV was identified as Lisa Smith, 28, of Epsom. She suffered minor injuries.

Deyermond said the teens and Smith were not wearing seat belts at the time, but that airbags deployed in Smith's vehicle.

All three were transported to Concord Hospital with ambulances from Epsom, Nottingham and Raymond.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

&#';They claimed their brakes on the truck weren't working when they came down the hill,&#'; Deyermond said, adding that the damage to the vehicles was extensive &#';so they had to be going pretty fast.&#';

Deyermond said police saw no brake marks on the road.

Police have impounded the truck to take a closer look at the vehicle.
