On eve of Mass. tax holiday, NH governor touts his state

CONCORD — Every day is a holiday from paying a sales tax in New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch reminded Massachusetts shoppers Thursday on the eve of that state&#';s annual two-day sales tax holiday.

&#';In New Hampshire, we believe you should be able to shop on your own time, and not just two days out of the year,&#'; Lynch said. &#';Because in New Hampshire, every day is a sales tax holiday.&#';

Appearing with retailers at the newly opened Merrimack Premium Outlets with over 100 retail stores, Lynch touted the state&#';s tax-friendly environment as he has done in the past when Massachusetts declares a sales-tax holiday.

This year the holiday exempts items less than $2,500 from the state&#';s 6.25 percent sales tax that are for personal use. Purchases for business use are not exempt.

&#';Here in New Hampshire, we pride ourselves on a high quality of life, scenic beauty and one of the most business-friendly and tax-friendly environments in the country,&#'; Lynch said. &#';I believe we have truly become a retail shopping destination for the people of this region, and beyond. Visitors who stay, shop and eat in New Hampshire are important to our economy, and I want to do everything possible as governor to encourage more people to come to New Hampshire — whether it is for a week or for a few hours of shopping.&#';
