End near for Derry school projects
DERRY — The school district’s summer construction and renovation projects are all moving along on schedule and should be completed by the time classes begin.
The biggest project in the schools over the summer has been the replacement of the West Running Brook Middle School gym floor.
“The gym floor is 95 percent done,” said Jane Simard, the school finance director. “The last coat of finish was put on the other day.”
The only work left on the floor, she said, is installing the baseboards around the perimeter of the gym.
“It’s absolutely beautiful,” Simard said. She said the lighter wood used for the floor makes the gym look larger.
“I can’t wait for the public to see it and be able to use it,” she said. “We need to give it a couple of weeks to dry, and then we should be good to go in there.”
Earlier this year, the floor suffered water damage when a hot-water pipe burst. Rather than just replacing the damaged portion of the floor, the School Board OK’d a plan for a new gym floor for $130,000, $85,000 of which will be covered by the district’s insurance policy.
Several board members said that with the insurance money to cover two-thirds of the cost, it made sense to move forward with replacing the entire gym floor.
Simard said a new floor would last longer and also would use material that has more of a spring to it and would be less liable to suffer water damage.
She praised the job the contractors, Danaher Flooring of Vermont, have done thus far.
In addition to the gym floor project, there have been several paving projects throughout the school district, including at the East Derry and Grinnell elementary schools.
“We will see some great results,” said Simard. “East Derry has been a long time coming.”
All the schools have seen some work done, from painting and flooring to renovations to the bathrooms.
“All of our projects are on schedule and everything should be done before the students come back,” said Simard. “Everything looks really good.”
