Concord drops opener of N.E. Legion tourney
OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine — The Concord Post 21 American Legion baseball team received a strong pitching performance from starter David Drouin in Thursday’s Northeast Regional Tournament. Post 21 also collected nine hits — three more than Barnstable, Mass.
What Post 21 didn’t do was play good defense.
Concord committed five errors that led to three unearned runs and opened the tournament with a 5-1 loss at The Ballpark.
“I thought David Drouin threw the ball well,” Concord coach Bryan Caruso said. “We didn’t help him out at all. He had to work for extra outs. I think we made five errors. That’s just not good enough to get it done here.”
Concord will play its next game in the double-elimination tournament today at 1 p.m. Post 21 will face the loser of Thursday’s final game between Milford, Conn., and Saco, Maine. Saco went 0-2 in the Maine state tournament, but qualified for the Northeast Regional as the host team.
Concord trailed 4-1 when Drouin was pulled after one batter in the eighth. Three of the four runs were unearned.
Drouin, who pitched for Merrimack Valley of Penacook during the high school season, entered the tournament with a 5-2 record and a 0.85 ERA. Aubrey Gates (Pembroke Academy) allowed one earned run and recorded the final three outs.
Barnstable center fielder Dylan Morris collected the game’s biggest hit when his solo home run gave his team a 2-1 lead in the sixth. Barnstable (25-2-1) scored another run in that inning and added two more in the eighth.
Barnstable received a complete game from Keegan Dellacona, who raised his record to 8-0. Dellacona walked five and struck out two.
Concord (24-6) left 12 runners on base.
“We did have a lot of hits, but that’s been our problem — we’ve been leaving too many guys on base,” Caruso said. “We get out of our approach at the plate when we have guys on and start chasing first pitches. We have to be more disciplined and understand the situation a little more.”
Concord took a 1-0 lead in the second, when right fielder Kenny Hart reached on a single and ended up scoring on Eddie Dionne’s single.
Dionne had three of Concord’s nine hits.
