UPDATED: Three people, including constable, killed in shooting near Texas A&M
COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Three people have died, including a Brazos County constable and a reported gunman, in a shootout Monday afternoon in College Station, according to police.
A 65-year-old male bystander also was killed in the shooting, which occurred about 12:15 p.m. CDT at a home near the Texas A&M University campus, Assistant Police Chief Scott McCollum said.
The constable was identified as Precinct 1 Constable Brian Bachmann. Officials have not released the name of the civilian or the shooter.
Two other people were shot, McCollum said: A 55-year-old woman who is in surgery, and a College Station police officer who was shot in the calf and is in stable condition and receiving treatment.
Two other officers received injuries that were not considered life-threatening, he said.
“As you can imagine, in a situation like this it’s very chaotic,” McCollum said.
Constable Bachmann was shot by the home’s resident when he arrived about 12:12 p.m., launching an extended gunfight when College Station police quickly arrived — summoned by a 911 call reporting shots fired, McCollum said.
Two police officers were nearby and arrived within minutes of the call and “took fire,” McCollum said. “Additional officers began to respond and engage the individual.”
The gunfight lasted perhaps as long as 30 minutes, McCollum said.
Officers performed CPR on Bachmann, who had been down in the front yard, until he was taken to a local hospital, where he later died, McCollum said.
McCollum did not say how many shots were fired or what kind of weapon was used or whether the shooter was a homeowner or renter, saying the investigation is continuing.
Police are collecting evidence from at least four crime scenes in the neighborhood — about six blocks have been closed — and additional crime scenes be added, he said.
“There are many, many different witnesses. ... There’s a lot of details we’re trying to piece together,” McCollum said. “It is a tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those involved and the families of those involved.”
