New Hampshire Business News in Brief

Tax credits issued for nonprofit projects

Concord — More than $5.4 million has been awarded through the Community Development Finance Authority Tax Credit Program to 16 New Hampshire organizations for projects. The CDFA Board of Directors has approved the funding — in the form of state tax credits — for projects from Nashua to Lisbon and Keene to Portsmouth. The tax credits allow for nearly $42 million in leverage for these projects.

“These tax credits are designed to stimulate private investment in community development projects throughout New Hampshire,” said CDFA Executive Director Kathy Bogle Shields. “Now they'll be able to attract the necessary support to complete their missions of providing affordable housing, economic development and community revitalization.”

“Companies that donate to these nonprofit projects can now get a 75 percent business tax credit against their contribution,” said Janet Ackerman, CDFA acting board chairwoman.

Among the awards made include $700,000 to renovate the Boys & Girls Club facility on Bradley Street, $300,000 to help rebuild the Concord's fire-razed Friendly Kitchen and $125,000 to upgrade the nonprofit Red River Theatre to digital projection.

Awards included a tax credit of $300,000 to NeighborWorks Greater Manchester to purchase a downtown building for office and business development; $500,000 in tax credits to Manchester's historic Palace Theatre for public safety and electrical improvements; $500,000 in tax credits to the City of Manchester to renovate the historic Odd Fellows Building to accommodate nine nonprofit agencies operating in the city.

Insurer aids SHARE with school supplies

Milford— Holt Proctor McBriarty Insurance Agency recently delivered more than 1,000 school supplies and backpacks to SHARE Outreach as a result of the agency's July backpack/school supply drive.

The agency decided to partner with SHARE Outreach after hearing of the organization's need for school supplies.

“We were certainly glad to help,” said Lyle Fulkerson, the agency's president and CEO. “It was a joint effort as our staff, clients, carriers and community all stepped forward to make this drive a success.”

Though donations initially came in slowly, the drive was jump-started by an anonymous donor who left a huge box of school supplies on the agency's doorstep one morning during the drive.

“The selfless generosity of the anonymous donor helped kick-start the drive into high gear and was an inspiration to all of us,” Fulkerson said. After that donation, the school supplies continued to flow in.

Christine Janson, Executive Director of SHARE Outreach also felt that the school supply and backpack drive was a success. “'I am so pleased that Holt Proctor McBriarty Insurance Agency teamed up with SHARE to support kids in need as they begin a new school year,” Janson said. “The drive for school supplies was a huge success and will go a long way in outfitting SHARE's 225 families of school-aged children so they are ready to learn.”

MVSB awards $1,000 Ashland Police Department

MEREDITH — The Meredith Village Savings Bank Fund awarded a $1,000 grant to the Ashland Police Department for the purchase a high-quality digital camera to aid in investigations of violent and major crimes.

The police department has two basic digital cameras for everyday use, but for more challenging investigations, it needed a more sophisticated camera. Prior to receiving the grant, the department borrowed a more advanced digital camera from a neighboring police department.

“Our new camera allows us to be much more flexible and prepared for any situation; we can take a photo in a dark room, capture a close-up photo of a serial number, or photograph an investigation from a distance,” said Ashland Police Chief Anthony Randall. “With MVSB's support, we can better serve the people of Ashland without having to rely on other police departments for assistance.”

The award is one of 32 grants totaling $78,762 awarded by the MVSB Fund in the most recent grant cycle. Applications for the next set of grants are due by Oct. 15. More information can be found at mvsb.com.

Shaheen announces funds for job growth

WASHINGTON— A $708,750 grant to help communities in rural New Hampshire develop their infrastructure and improve energy efficiency will create jobs and spur economic growth, said U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., in announcing the grant.

The funding, which requires a local match, has been awarded to a consortium of education and economic development groups by the U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The Northern Tier Farm and Forest Jobs Accelerator program would encourage economic growth by assisting communities in rural New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont to improve energy efficiency, develop new fuel sources, enhance the entrepreneurial environment, increase telecommunications capability, strengthen transportation infrastructure and improve regional marketing of specialized wood products, such as wood pellet fuel. The project is a joint effort by the Northern Community Investment Corporation, the Northern Forest Center, White Mountains Community College, Sustainable Forest Futures and the Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund.

With the grant funding, these groups will provide training to encourage businesses and contractors to install boilers powered by locally produced wood pellets. In addition, they will provide small businesses with Internet sales training, develop strategies to expand high-speed Internet access and begin planning for a regional agricultural processing facility and distribution network.
