Concord ousted from American Legion Northeast Regional baseball tournament
OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine — The curtain was pulled on the Concord Post 21 American Legion baseball team’s season Sunday night.
The end came following a 12-1 loss to Milford, Conn., in the American Legion’s Northeast Regional at The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach. The game ended after the seventh inning because of the 10-run rule.
Concord went 2-2 in the double-elimination tournament, and completed its season with a 26-7 record.
Sam Bonifant, who helped Hopkinton win the Division III championship in the spring, started on the mound and took the loss. He allowed seven runs (three earned) and 11 hits in 3 2/3 innings. Milford had 16 hits in the game.
Milford will play Portland, Maine, to determine the Northeast Regional champion today. Because Milford has not lost a tournament game, Portland will have to defeat Milford twice to claim the championship.
The tournament champion will advance to the American Legion World Series in Shelby, N.C.
Milford’s Taylor Biagioni pitched all seven innings to collect the win. Biagioni entered the game with a 1-1 record, and had surrendered two earned runs in 20 innings on the mound this season.
Biagioni remained on the mound even though the game was delayed by rain for 45 minutes after the fourth inning was completed.
Milford grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third, added six runs in the fourth, scored twice in the sixth and once in the seventh. The three-run third included a solo home run by catcher Joe Zanghi.
Concord collected three hits, a single by Dillon Emerson, a single by Eddie Dionne and a double by Ben Bengtson. Concord’s only run came when Bengtson scored from third on a wild pitch in the fifth inning.
Concord committed four errors in the loss.
