NH jobless rises to 5.4 percent

New Hampshire’s unemployment rate rose 0.3 percent in June but still remained nearly 3 percent below the national average, according to figures released Tuesday.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for July was 5.4 percent, compared to 5.1 percent in June and 5.5 percent in July 2011, New Hampshire Employment Security reported.

The state estimates the number of employed residents at 699,310, a decrease of 4,450 from June and an increase of 3,060 from July 2011. The number of unemployed residents increased by 2,270 to 40,140, about 600 fewer than in July 2011. From June to July, the total labor force decreased by 2,180 to 739,450, an increase of 2,460 from July 2011.

Nationally, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for July was 8.3 percent.
