Fire destroys storage barn in Alton
ALTON – A one-alarm fire gutted an 800-square-foot storage barn at 265 Rand Hill Road Monday night.
Assistant Fire Chief Ed Consentino said the fire was reported to the department at 10:04 p.m. When Fire Chief Scott Williams saw flames glowing in the distance upon approaching the scene, he called in a first alarm for assistance.
Fire crews from Wolfeboro, New Durham, Gilford, Gilmanton, and Barnstead assisted at the scene, with the Farmington Fire Department providing station coverage and the Meredith EMS providing ambulance coverage for Alton.
Consentino said the fire was declared under control within the hour, shortly after 11 p.m., but that the structure was totally demolished. The two-and-a-half-story storage barn contained tools, machinery, lumber and other items. It was located about 400 feet from the main road and 100 feet from the main house. Consentino said Robert Dilworth owns the property. Damage was estimated at $70,000, he said.
“The building was a total loss,” Consentino said. He doubts if the cause of the blaze will ever be determined.
“We don’t know how the fire started. The fire was so involved when we got there. There’s nothing left,” he said.
