Mosquitoes not invited to Londonderry Old Home Day festivities

LONDONDERRY - The spraying of Londonderry's public outdoor venues to control the mosquito population began on Monday evening.

With reports of West Nile Virus-positive mosquitoes confirmed in several nearby towns, town officials aren't taking any chances, especially with Old Home Day festivities beginning later this week, interim Town Manager Bill Hart said.

Hart said the potentially deadly virus was found last week in adult mosquitoes trapped near the Londonderry town limits.

Shortly after 5 p.m. on Monday, workers from Dragon Mosquito Control in Brentwood began spraying the fields at Londonderry Town Common and the outdoor areas surrounding Matthew Thornton, the middle school and the high school.

The spraying process takes just under five hours and will be repeated again on Tuesday evening to make sure no adult mosquitoes remain, with the insecticides Anvil 10+10 (sumithrin), Zenivex E20 (entofenprox) and Permanone 10EC (permethrin) being applied to the areas.

Hart said there are no plans to spray the town's roadways at present time, though Dragon Mosquito will be spraying the town recreation fields on Nelson and West roads on Wednesday evening.

Londonderry Old Home Day kicks off Wednesday evening, with a barbecue for the town's senior citizens at Lions Hall, followed by a free concert on the Town Common.

Events are scheduled throughout the rest of the week and this weekend, with the majority of activities centered along Mammoth Road and on the Town Common.

While spraying lowers the risk of contracting mosquito-borne illnesses, town officials urge those attending any outdoor activities to exercise common sense by wearing protective clothing, applying insect repellents frequently and to be conscious of any breeding areas, such as standing water around homes and yards.

Residents may call Dragon at 734-4144 or the Town Hall at 432-1100 for more information regarding spray dates, times, locations, insecticides, precautions, West Nile Virus and other related concerns.
