Morrow, Fisher Cats top Binghamton Mets
MANCHESTER — Blue Jays starter Brandon Morrow made a stop in New Hampshire to rev up his fastball, leading the Fisher Cats to a 5-2 win over the Binghamton Mets in Tuesday’s series opener at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
Morrow, on the mend from an oblique strain, worked 4 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and striking out six before a crowd of 3,268. Ryan Schimpf singled home Brad Glenn as the Fisher Cats took the lead in the fourth inning, and Kevin Howard ripped a two-run homer in the fifth inning.
Morrow, restricted to a pitch count, exited in the fifth inning after his 67th pitch. Fisher Cats reliever Michael Dubee served up a two-run to Allan Dykstra, but New Hampshire’s next three relievers were untouchable. Marcus Stroman (2-0), Chorye Spoone and Sam Dyson (sixth save) all worked a scoreless inning of relief without allowing a hit.
Jake Marisnick had a pair of doubles against Mets starter Gonzalez Germen (6-10), who exited in the sixth inning after giving up Howard’s sixth homer of the season. New Hampshire had been 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position until Schimpf’s single to right field in the fourth.
Schimpf and Howard each had a pair of hits to lead New Hampshire (49-73). Marisnick has three extra-base hits over the past two games, including a triple. The Mets dropped to 59-63 in the 15th of 20 meeting against New Hampshire this season.
