Granite State's Williamson is ousted from U.S. Amateur
This week the Cherry Hills Golf Course turned out to be a tough challenge for Peter Williamson.
The Hanover native bogeyed four holes Wednesday which contributed to a 3 and 2 loss to Chris Williams of Moscow, Idaho, in the first round of match play in the 112th United States Amateur Championship in Cherry Hills Village, Colo.
Earlier in the day Williamson was one of 17 players who competed in a special playoff for one of the final 13 match play berth spots.
Williamson’s two-day 76-67-143 score placed him in an overall tie for 52nd place in a field of 312.
After qualifying for match play yesterday morning, Williamson drew Williams, who is the all-time wins leader at the University of Washington and the 2010 recipient of the Phil Mickelson Award as the nation’s top freshman collegiate player.
Williams qualified for match play with a three-under-par 65-73-138 two-day score, good for a seventh place tie.
On Monday Williamson encountered problems on the Cherry Hills Golf Course, when he bogeyed five holes and scored a double bogey on another. He finished that day with a five-over-par 76.
He dug himself out of that hole on Tuesday playing on what he called a “scoreable” Common Grounds Golf Course. He torched that course for a three-under-par 67, converting five birdies in that round.
But back on the Cherry Hills course Wednesday, Williamson couldn’t stay consistent with Williams, who parred the first 10 holes for a 2-up lead.
Williamson was three-over at the turn as he bogeyed the par four, second hole, double bogeyed the par four, fourth hole and bogeyed the par four, ninth hole. He birdied the par four, seventh hole.
On the 11th hole, Williamson went 3-down when Williams converted a birdie on the par five hole. Williamson birdied the par four, 13th hole, but Williams matched it on the par three, 15th to go 3-up. Both golfers parred out on the 16th hole ending the match with two holes to play.
Williamson is a three-time Ivy League champion from Dartmouth College.
