Milford billed Romney, and expects check soon
MILFORD — The check is reportedly in the mail to cover the security costs of Mitt Romney’s ice cream social on the Milford Oval in June, but resident Jon Ricciardi said it’s not nearly enough to cover the cost of the visit to taxpayers.
According to Selectmen Chairman Gary Daniels, Romney’s campaign has been invoiced $1,001 for the extra details needed when the Republican presidential contender came to town June 15. It was decided that Romney’s campaign should only be charged the cost of bringing in additional personnel to manage the crowds and keep traffic moving.
The bill, however, hasn’t yet been paid. Daniels said that was the result of an email error, not any failure on the part of the Romney camp to fulfill its obligations.
“We were apparently sending the invoice to the wrong email address,” he said. “We think we have it resolved now.”
But Ricciardi said a visit that severely limited traffic on the Milford Oval, keeping people from visiting businesses downtown, and using up the time and effort of town employees, should cost more than $1,001.
“They took people from their normal duties and put on this event,” said Ricciardi. “How is that benefitting the Milford taxpayers?”
Daniels said that having Romney visit was free advertising for the town of Milford.
“At a time when we’re trying to promote how wonderful Milford is, this kind of event is incredibly helpful,” he said.
And the doors would be open to President Obama as well, said Daniels, a Republican state representative. “If the President wanted to come to town, we’d welcome him too.”
