Obama's travels: Another bill for NH
President Obama is due to come campaigning in New Hampshire tomorrow and the taxpayers will foot the bill. To paraphrase Mark Twain’s line from the man being ridden out of town on a rail, if it were not for the honor of his visit, we would just as soon the President skipped the whole thing.
Seriously, this President has spent the better part of the last year campaigning for another term. The security costs associated with such trips are awesome and in large part necessary. But these campaigns are awash in cash, both from direct contributions and from well-heeled supporting political action committees.
It is one thing to be inundated with TV and radio ads touting the President and his programs. The campaign is paying for those and the consumer can digitally jump over the annoying TV ads.
But the taxpayers of Windham and Rochester can’t say no to the bill for extra police, fire, and other personnel. Neither can taxpayers across the state who will be billed for state and country security.
Is it too much to ask the Obama campaign to pay something, both for the local and state security costs as well as the national security costs involved?
Never mind. We know the answer.
