Ping pong ball drop to benefit YMCA camp and a $1,000 winner

KINGSTON — It'll be raining pingpong balls Tuesday night, and if one lands just right, a lucky winner will walk away with $1,000.

YMCA Camp Lincoln will hold its first Ping Pong Ball Drop Tuesday during the camp's Community Night from 6 to 8 p.m.

Community Night visitors have a chance to tour the camp at 67 Ball Road and experience some of the activities offered to its nearly 2,000 campers.

About 10 percent of the campers attend, with the help of some financial assistance.

The Ping Pong Ball Drop will benefit the summer camp scholarship. Participants can purchase a numbered ball for $10, six for $50 or 14 for $100.

When the 1,000 pingpong balls are dropped, the person with the ball that lands in a hole in the ground, or closest to it, will win $1,000. Those who purchase the balls for the drop do not need to be present to win.

The camp holds a Community Night three times a summer.

“This one will be the biggest and most interesting with live music and the pingpong ball entertainment,” said Rhonda Bernstein, the camp's development director.

Bernstein said she's excited about the opportunity for community members to see what the camp is about and how its programs rely on their support to reach those in need.

The idea for the Ping Pong Drop came in February when Camp Director Jeff Gleason wanted to come up with a project that the summer staff and counselors could embrace to support the camp's scholarship program, Bernstein said.

The balls will be dropped from a mesh basket on a utility truck donated by Unitil along with two linemen, one of whom will be raised in the bucket to about 30 feet above the camp's sports field. The basket will be tipped completely upside down to give all the balls equal opportunity to find the hole in the field.

Pingpong ball numbers will be available until 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. Before then, pingpong numbers may be purchased by visiting Mountain Dog Outfitters in Plaistow or Exeter Music in Exeter, from any YMCA Camp Lincoln staffer, and online at www.ymcacamplincoln.org or email info@ymcacamplincoln.org.
