Police to question mother of boy, 14, killed after getting out of car on I-93
LONDONDERRY - An interview with the mother of the teen fatally struck after leaping from a parked vehicle along Interstate 93 Wednesday afternoon will hopefully reveal more details of the events leading up to the accident, state police said on Friday.
The identity of the 14-year-old boy and his mother, both New Hampshire residents according to State Police Captain John LeLacheur, won't be revealed at this time. The police captain added that he was uncertain which town the family lived in.
LeLacheur said the state police are unable to release names in accordance with the state's Driver Privacy Act, noting that the mother's vehicle hadn't played a role in the crash.
The law also prohibits officials from disclosing personal information without her consent, he said.
On Friday morning, LeLacheur said he expected the interview to be conducted later that day, though investigations could take several weeks to complete. The police had initially held off on interviewing the mother due to the traumatic nature of the incident.
State police have identified the driver as Griffin George, 28, of Derry. George faces no criminal charges, and LeLacheur said there was “no evidence to indicate any signs of improper operation or speed.”
The police captain further noted that several witnesses driving in the area at the time of the crash were all able to stop at a reasonable pace, indicating the overall reasonable speed of the afternoon's highway travelers. Witness testimony also indicates that George was likewise obeying the speed limits when the incident occurred.
LeLacheur said he's hoping more motorists will come forward, particularly those who may have witnessed the events leading up to the crash.
Londonderry Police received a 911 call from the mother shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon. Local police said the mother reported having just had a “possible domestic” with her son, who'd reportedly attempted to grab her steering wheel while driving past Exit 4 northbound.
The mother said she had pulled over her car and called authorities. She was on the phone with the dispatcher when her son exited the car, ran into the woods and, moments later, ran towards the center of the highway where he was struck by George's vehicle, Londonderry Police Lt. Tim Jones said.
Londonderry Police Officer Eric Arel and members of the Londonderry Fire Department were the first to arrive on the scene, and quickly determined that the victim had no pulse.
LeLacheur said an autopsy was conducted on the victim the following day and it was determined the teen had died instantly of “multiple blunt force trauma.”
The accident remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call Trooper Christopher Cummings at NH State Police Troop-B at 223-4381.
