Pats come up short at Tampa, 30-28
The New England Patriots couldn't sustain much offense when it counted and lost to the Buccaneers, 30-28, on Friday night in Tampa, Fla.
First-round draft picks Mark Barron and Doug Martin scored touchdowns for Tampa Bay, which built a 30-14 lead early in the fourth quarter.
New England quarterback Tom Brady played three quarters, throwing one touchdown pass, to Rob Gronkowski, and an interception that was tipped by Ronde Barber and returned 22 yards by Barron for the score in the first quarter.
Brady finished 13 for 20, for 127 yards. The TD pass to Gronkowski, covering 16 yards, came in the third quarter.
The Buccaneers scored first, driving 68 yards in eight plays. Josh Freeman completed all three of his passes on the drive, for 49 yards, and Martin capped the drive with a one-yard run.
Stevan Ridley one-yard run, capping a six-play 48-yard drive, pulled the Pats closer in the first half. Ridley had the key run of the drive, a 29-yard burst.
The Bucs nailed three long field goal: Connor Barth’s 56-yarder, then two by Kai Forbath (51 and 55, as time expired in the first half).
Ryan Mallett completed seven of 13 passes for the Pats, including two for TDs in the fourth quarter.
New England dropped to 1-2 in the preseason. Tampa Bay improved to 2-1.
The Patriots play at the New York Giants next Wednesday night.
