Weather proves unconventional political foe
The Tampa Bay Times Forum where the Convention is taking place was a hot spot for members of the media and politicians alike. The purpose of the opening ceremony was to not only signify the start of the Republican Convention, but also to reveal a special national debt clock.
In attendance at the opening ceremony was former Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts, Kerry Healy, who shared her thoughts about the national debt.
“The national debt is definitely a huge topic of interest for the people getting ready to vote in this upcoming election, and if you ask them what is on their minds, it is jobs, the economy, and finally debt. Many people are concerned about how the national debt is going to impact themselves, their children, and their children's children,” Healy said.
Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, soon called the Convention to order at 2 p.m. with several loud smacks from his gavel.
Then as quickly as it started, Reince called a recess and the Convention was adjourned after only lasting a couple of seconds.
Priebus then addressed the audience saying, “We also want to draw your attention to the unprecedented fiscal recklessness of the Obama administration,” and revealed the massive debt clock mounted high up on the wall, which at the time exceeded the amount of 15 trillion dollars.
There is a second clock that is responsible for keeping track of how much more national debt has accumulated since the beginning of the Republican National Convention.
A brief moment of silence in order to give thanks for the convention staff and all of their efforts and to keep in mind all of those affected by hurricane Isaac was held by Priebus, Then Reverend Russell from Texas gave the opening prayer.
Priebus exited the stage, and as he did, the lights in the forum went very low and the large screens that outlined the Convention stage lit up. Governor Romney's image appeared and a short promotional film played which left the audience cheering loudly.
The Convention will resume tomorrow afternoon as scheduled, and the Republican Party said that they can run a quality Convention with one less day.
