2 deaths reported in Legionnaires' disease outbreak

CHICAGO — Two recent guests of a downtown Chicago Marriott have died after contracting Legionnaires' disease, Chicago Department of Public Health officials said Monday.

Those are among eight cases of Legionnaires' in people who stayed at the JW Marriott, 151 W. Adams St., between mid-July and mid-August.

None of the eight people who contracted the disease live in, or are being treated in, the Chicago area. City officials declined to provide any other information about the victims, citing privacy laws. It also wasn't clear whether any of the other six surviving guests are in life-threatening condition.

Hotel officials and the Chicago Department of Public Health announced three cases of the disease but no fatalities last Tuesday. At the time, hotel officials had mailed letters notifying about 65 percent of the 8,500 guests who stayed at the hotel between July 16 and Aug. 15. As of Monday, the hotel had reached 80 percent of guests who stayed during that period.
