Drug company settlement means $2.76 million for NH
CONCORD — The state treasury is in line to receive $2.76 million after Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc. reached a settlement over allegations that it improperly marketed anti-psychotic drugs, state officials said.
New Hampshire Attorney General Michael Delaney on Thursday announced that he and 35 other attorneys general reached a $200 million settlement with the company, a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson.
Authorities said Janssen promoted Risperdal, an atypical or second-generation antipychotic, for off-label uses. Physicians can prescribe drugs for illnesses they are not intended for, but companies are barred from urging them to do so.
Delaney said Janssen promoted the drug to treat Alzheimer's disease, dementia, depression and anxiety in geriatric and pediatric populations.
“It is extremely important that prescription drugs be used only for the purpose for which they are intended,” Delaney said in prepared remarks.
Settlement dollars will be used for New Hampshire consumer protection, including enforcement, education and litigation.
