One arrest made in Candia attempted burglary

CANDIA — Police are seeking the public’s help in their investigation into an attempted burglary that resulted in the arrest of a Manchester man.

Barry Southworth, 39, was arrested Wednesday and charged with attempted burglary, criminal trespass and criminal mischief after he and another man were spotted by police Monday near a vehicle that appeared suspicious.

According to police, Sgt. Scott Gallagher was patrolling in the area of High Street near the Hooksett town line Monday when he saw a black Chevy Lumina around 1:20 p.m. parked on the shoulder of the eastbound lane, but facing west.

Gallagher located Southworth and another unidentified man nearby and began an investigation.

Police said Gallagher checked a nearby residence but no one was home and he couldn’t determine whether someone had attempted to break in. Southworth and the other man were released and not charged at the time, police said.

A few hours later the resident reported an attempted burglary at the house. It’s not clear how the attempt was made, but police said nothing was taken.

Southworth was arrested Wednesday and ordered held at the Rockingham County jail on $20,000 cash or surety bail, following an arraignment Thursday.

Police are also investigating a residential burglary on Merrill Road, which is located off of High Street, that occurred during the weekend of Aug. 17. According to Police Chief Michael McGillen, police have not linked that burglary to the attempted break in on High Street.

Police are urging residents to report any suspicious people or vehicles in their neighborhood immediately.

McGillen also reminded residents to check their doors and windows to make sure that they’re locked, especially if they’re leaving home for a few days.

Anyone who may have seen the Chevy Lumina suspected in the High Street attempted burglary in their neighborhood over the past few weeks is asked to call the Candia Police Department at 483-2318.
