College Roundup: John Jay boots PSU in two OTs
Wilson Quinde knocked in a rebound off Plymouth State keeper Bjorn Ohlsson with just over three minutes remaining in the second overtime to give John Jay College a 5-4 victory over the Panthers as play continued in the ECAC Division III Soccer Classic in South Yarmouth, Mass., Saturday.
Quinde’s goal capped a Bloodhounds rally from a 3-1 halftime deficit.
Plymouth’s Taylor Rainey of Hooksett pushed a header into the left side of the net in the 86th minute to send the game into overtime.
Propelling PSU to its early lead were Petro Masumbuko of Manchester, Parker Spear and Aly El Tambouly.
Plymouth outshot the Bloodhounds 17-13 and held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
Emmanuel 1, Daniel Webster 0: At Nashua, Kevin Shirley redirected a Kevin Esposito cross with a header through defensive traffic for the only goal of the match in the 49th minute. Merrimack’s Paul Hoy had both DWC shots on goal.
Field hockey
Keene State 9, Western New England 2: At Keene, Kalin Billert of North Conway netted a hat trick and an assist to power the Owls. Hannah Gage of Lebanon added a pair of goals while Emily Medeiros, Aimee Donaruma, Marissa Lemoine of Berlin and Julia Forgione of Windham rounded out the scoring.
Caitlin Davino-Draper and Meaghan Dwyer split time the Owls net, and each made one save.
Dottie Zenaty Invitational: At Springfield, Mass., Brockport State bolted to a three-goal lead en route to a 5-3 victory over Plymouth State. Olivia Colburn of Lancaster scored twice for the Panthers and Nikki Garvey of Canaan netted the third PSU goal. Goalie Hilary Lemelin of Milan made three stops including a save on a penalty stroke.
Volleyball
Rutgers Invitational: At New Brunswick, N.J., Morgan Thatcher posted a match-high 13 kills to lead the University of New Hampshire past Iona, 3-0.
UConn Classic: At Storrs, Conn., Dartmouth wrapped up tourney action with losses to both Michigan State and Fairfield in straight sets. Paige Caridi had seven kills against the Spartans while Alex Schoenberger had eight kills against the Stags.
Women’s tennis
Plymouth State 8, Southern Maine 1: At Gorham, Maine, the Panthers swept the doubles competition and claimed five-of-six singles matches in straight sets. Sara Burke and Molly Heartfield teamed to win their No. 1 doubles match, 9-7, before taking their respective No. 1 and 2 singles matches.
Cross country
KSC Alumni Race: At Keene, the MIT women claimed four of the top six positions to cruise to the win. Maggie Fitter was the first Owls finisher, placing 10th with a time of 11:56. In the men’s race, MIT placed all five of its scoring runners in the top 10 to score a meet-low 27 points. The Owls were led by Thomas Paquette who finished 11th in 16:24.
