Shane Brozowski threw for 400 yards and four touchdowns as Castleton State spoiled opening day for the Plymouth State University football team, handing the Panthers a 35-7 setback before nearly 3,000 fans in non-conference action at Castleton, Vt., Saturday.

It was the eighth time in Brozowski’s career that he has thrown for more than 400 yards, as he connected on 18-of-25 attempts in the first half for 308 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Spartans to a 28-7 halftime lead.

The senior quarterback connected with Kevin Alberque for all three first-half strikes, tying a Castleton State program record. Alberque led six Spartan receivers with six catches for 139 yards.

Andrew Foglia paced the Plymouth State ground game with 96 yards rushing and the lone Panther touchdown on 20 attempts. Quarterback Jake Tyler added 43 yards on 13 carries and Bennet Banks had six carries in the second half for 40 yards.

It took Brozowski just four plays before he hooked up with Alberque for a 49-yard TD on the game’s first drive.

Meanwhile, PSU was held scoreless on its first four possessions.

Brozowski opened the second quarter with a 57-yard scoring strike to Alberque.

Plymouth answered with a nine-play, 73-yard scoring drive capped by Foglia’s four-yard plunge to paydirt.

Castleton struck on its next two possessions to account for the halftime score.

The winners limited PSU to 300 total yards in the game and forced five turnovers.

Louis Montegari, Chris Smith of Merrimack and Mark Hennessy led the Panthers defense with six tackles apiece.

Plymouth State has its second consecutive non-conference game Saturday when it hosts Mount Ida at Panther Field at 1 p.m.
