NORTHFIELD — The driver of a stolen car involved in Sunday’s fatal crash on Interstate 93 is being charged with negligent homicide.

Robert M. Pitts, 18, of Weare is to be arraigned Tuesday in Concord District Court. He is being held on $200,000 cash bail at the Merrimack County House of Correction.

Paige Garneau, 19, of Laconia died after she was critically injured in the crash, police said. Garneau was a passenger in a 2012 Chevrolet Impala reported as stolen, sparking the police pursuit.

State Police Sgt. Maurice Sampson said Tilton and Northfield police were chasing Pitts around 2:45 a.m. Pitts got onto the highway at the exit 19 ramp and headed south with Tilton and Northfield police following, Sampson said. He kept driving to the exit 17 off-ramp and tried to get off the highway.

“Pitts took the off-ramp and failed to negotiate the corner,” Sampson stated. “The vehicle subsequently left the roadway and came to a rest after hitting several trees.”

State police said the chase did not appear to be high-speed.

“The verbal information we have from the officers involved indicate the speed of the vehicles involved was between 55 and 60 miles per hour,” Lt. Mark Armaganian said. “We won’t know for sure until we extract the data from the vehicle during the vehicle autopsy, and the accident reconstruction.”

Garneau and Pitts were both taken to Concord Hospital, where Garneau was pronounced dead.

Alvirne High School Principal Steven Beals, who served as principal at Laconia High School during Garneau’s freshman year, had kind words to pass along about the victim.

“I do remember her, and my memories are positive ones,” he said.

Beals added: “The untimely death of someone that young is always hard, and my condolences go out to her parents and family.”

Pitts is also being charged with felony disobeying a police officer resulting in personal injury, and one count of breach of bail. Police are asking anyone with information to contact Troop D Barracks at (603) 223-8496.
