Tara Watt has seen the plaque that hangs on the wall at Manchester's Derryfield Country Club.
It's the one with the winners from the Manchester women's golf championship. Louise Billy and Andrea Morrell dominate the names that are listed.
After her steady play over the weekend, Tara Watt will now see her name on the plaque, as well, as the 2012 champion.
“Louise Billy and Andrea Morell are phenomenal golfers,” Watt said. “I just tried to hit fairways and greens and tried to stay out of trouble.”
Watt shot 73 at Derryfield on Saturday and 74 at Intervale on Sunday to beat Billy (77-72—149) by a pair of strokes. Morrell finished third with a 79-78—157.
Watt balanced birdies and bogeys on Saturday at Derryfield until she got to the par 5 17th and then found some trouble in the form of a triple bogey. Her play overall, however, gave her a four-shot lead heading into Sunday's play.
“The four-stroke lead really helped,” Watt said. “I hit the ball pretty long and Intervale is a little shorter, so I tried to keep my driver in the bag and hit five wood from a lot of tees. I was trying to get approaches from 100 yards.”
Watt still led by four heading into Intervale's 18th and said she received a fortunate bounce off a tree from her drive. “I was a little nervous going into 18,” Watt said. “I duck hooked my drive but it kicked off a tree near the fairway. I punched out and was on in three. Louise ended up birdieing the hole so I was happy to have the lead that I did.”
Peg Tosi won the senior championship with her 90-96—186. Karen McBarron won the first flight (81-84—165) with Joanna Teas claiming the second flight (89-83—172). Ingrid Willikens shot a 95-98— 193 to win the third flight.
