Milton police seek public's help with several boat thefts
MILTON — Although a few residents have called with information, police continue to seek more clues into the theft of several outboard boat motors and canoes in the Micah Terrace area that happened over Labor Day weekend.
Police Chief Mark McGowan said he remains hopeful that a call will help the investigation, which began after residents reported the theft of five- and 10-horsepower motors and two canoes along Micah Terrace and an adjacent road between 10:30 p.m. Sunday and 3:30 a.m. Monday.
McGowan said the area is easily accessible by water, as is the area near the Salmon Falls River and Milton Three Ponds — near the Maine border. He added the thieves could have gone upstream, downstream or into Maine.
Investigators are looking into a variety of places where the stolen goods can be sold, McGowan said.
“For the price of metal, they could scrap them — the way the economy is,” McGowan said.
McGowan said people should keep their homes and property secured and alert police if they notice any suspicious activity. He added officers would rather respond to determine what was happening rather than hear about crimes after the fact.
“We are still actively investigating this and welcome any assistance,” McGowan said.
McGowan noted the same type of thefts occurred in town several years ago — possibly seven or more, but he only recalls making one arrest. As a result, he added, many of the crimes remain unsolved.
Anyone with information about the thefts or anyone who recalls being in the area at the time, is encouraged to contact investigators at 652-4514 x108. Anyone who notices suspicious activity is encouraged to contact Milton Police at 652-4500.
