Nashua to focus on its Tree Streets

NASHUA — Alderman-at-Large James Donchess has drafted a proposed resolution to create a Focus on the Tree Streets Day.

Donchess believes that crime, housing conditions, on-street parking and education are major concerns that need to be discussed openly with residents struggling with these issues.

The city has made numerous attempts in recent years to address problems in the Tree Street community, which includes Vine, Chestnut, Pine, Palm, Walnut, Ash, Beech and other streets to either side of West Hollis Street.

At Tuesday night’s aldermanic Planning and Economic Development Committee meeting, Director of Community Development Kathy Hersh unveiled a Tree Street neighborhood plan developed in conjunction with the Nashua Regional Planning Commission.

“Safety certainly is an issue in the Tree Streets,” Hersh said.

While there are already shelters and soup kitchens, Hersh said there is not a group dedicated solely to neighborhood issues such as housing, unemployment and crime.

The biggest obstacle is getting people involved in such an initiative, Hersh said.

She suggested sidewalks and infrastructure should be improved and the existing Heritage Trail should be maintained and possibly lit.

Rabbi Jonathan Spira-Savett, president of the Nashua Area Interfaith Council, offered to become a partner with the city in the initiative to improve the Tree streets.

“A lot of time they feel forgotten about,” said Ward 4 Selectman Stacie Laughton, who also offered to help.
