Keene makes big jump, but ...
Although the Keene High football team opened its season with an impressive 62-27 non-league victory over Division I Salem on Friday night, the news wasn't all good for the Blackbirds.
Keene quarterback Lucas Luopa didn't play in the fourth quarter after injuring his left ankle in the third. His status for Friday's Division II opener against Merrimack is still uncertain.
“He rolled his ankle pretty good,” said Keene coach Jonn Luopa, who is also Lucas' father. “He couldn't see the trainers (Monday) because of the holiday, but we'll see what happens when he sees them (Tuesday).
“He's in a walking boot and he's icing it six or seven times a day. He seems to be getting a little better, but he's still walking with a limp.”
The victory over Salem moved Keene to fifth in this week's Union Leader/WGIR/WMUR Power Poll. No team made a bigger jump in the power poll than the Blackbirds, who were tied with Salem for ninth place in the preseason poll.
Lucas Luopa, who is in his third season as Keene's starting quarterback, completed 13 of 22 pass attempts for 279 yards and four touchdowns against Salem. He also ran for 168 yards and two TDs on 12 carries.
Keene returned 15 starters (eight on offense) from its 2011 team, but has only four seniors who start.
“Do we deserve to be fifth in the poll?” John Luopa said. “I'm not sure about that. The only thing that matters to me is winning a state championship and to do that the first step is making the playoffs. It's a matter of taking things game by game. If we can stay healthy we should be OK because we should be able to put points on the board.”
The poll features five teams from Division I (Exeter, Pinkerton Academy of Derry, Manchester Central, Nashua South and Concord), four from Division II (Keene, Bedford, Winnacunnet of Hampton and Bishop Guertin of Nashua) and one from Division III (Portsmouth).
There was no change at the top of the poll, where Exeter, Pinkerton and Manchester Central all posted Week 1 victories and remained first, second and third, respectively. Exeter will play at Pinkerton — a game that features the schools that met in last year's Division I championship game — Saturday in Derry.
Nashua South moved up one spot to fourth after defeating Spaulding of Rochester, 35-20. Bedford is in the sixth spot, Portsmouth and Winnacunnet are tied for seventh, Bishop Guertin is ninth and Concord is 10th.
Portsmouth is the only Division III team that beat a Division I opponent last weekend. The Clippers knocked off Londonderry, 22-10.
Bishop Guertin remained in the poll despite losing its opener. The Cardinals, who have won seven of the last eight Division II championships, dropped from fourth to ninth after falling to Pinkerton 20-3.
Neither Winnacunnet nor Concord were in the preseason poll. The Warriors, who did not qualify for the Division II playoffs last year, opened their season by beating Division III Souhegan, 41-7. Concord climbed into the poll after a 41-0 victory over Division III Hollis/Brookline.
“It was good for the kids' confidence,” Concord coach Eric Brown said. “It was a pretty solid effort all the way around.”
Division II Dover dropped out of the poll after it lost to Exeter, 42-7. Salem also fell out of the top 10 following its loss to Keene.
“I told the kids before we played Salem that at the end of the game, whether we win or lose, we're still going to be 0-0 in our division,” John Luopa said. “Our schedule is still in front of us.”
